Science After School

Boy with rocket he made.

After school programs represent prime settings for youth to engage in and learn science. Such programs provide freedom for inquiry and student centered activities that support engagement in quality science learning opportunities. Given the limited amount of time for science in most public schools, many youth only encounter organized opportunities for science learning during after school enrichment programs.

The Lawrence Hall of Science is a national leader in providing and supporting quality after school science learning opportunities. Our work in this arena happens in many ways: direct service; science curriculum for after school programs; support to after school providers; advocacy, evaluation, policy.

Direct Service

We are a provider of high quality after school science content and programs to San Francisco Bay Area youth and youth-serving organizations through model after school programs housed on-site at LHS, in schools, and in community based organizations.

I’d like information about LHS after school programs and classes at LHS.

I’d like information about bringing science to my after school program or community.

Science Curriculum for After School Programs

LHS has created a series of after school products that engage students in compelling activities that explore fundamental science concepts. Developed by LHS’s GEMS program and published by Developmental Studies Center (DSC), the AfterSchool KidzScience series includes kits developed for use in an after school setting and provides everything needed for easy implementation, from simple presentation instructions to a complete set of materials.

Where can I find materials to allow me to engage students participating in my programs with compelling science activities that my after school staff won’t find intimidating or too complex to present?

Support to After School Providers

We provide technical assistance to youth serving programs, organizations and schools with in the forms of:

  • Program Development Support,
  • Materials Selection Support,
  • Professional and Staff Development.
I need help setting up an after school science program.

I’d like help finding high-quality science materials for after school settings.

Advocacy, Evaluation, Policy

LHS supports through advocacy, evaluation, policy analysis, and policy development activities.

I need resources to make the case for including science in my after school program.

I’d like information about evaluating my after school program.
